Somaliland: Somalia Blocks donated Student Scholarships

Hargeisa (SD) – The Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of Somaliland, says the Somali government blocked 7 out of 10 countries for providing scholarships to Somaliland students.

Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of Somaliland, Ahmed Hassan Ali Asowe, told the House of Representatives that the government of Somalia had blocked scholarships, according to the Higher Education Commission.

“The scholarships were previously given to students by Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Turkey, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Taiwan and the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia. Scholarships are currently being hampered by the Federal Government of Somalia, ”said Asowe.

Adding “Somalia argued that scholarships go through them. The countries currently donating scholarships to Somalilanders include the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, Taiwan and Ethiopia, and the rest sided with Somalia.”

The Somali government has not yet commented on allegations that it has withheld scholarships to Somaliland students.

The Somali federal government, in recent years, has been working hard to either cut off all aid to Somaliland, or have it go through Mogadishu.
