Somaliland: Speaks out against discrimination against ethnic minorities

Hargeisa (SD) – The Somaliland government has spoken out against discrimination against ethnic minorities, calling it a disgrace.

The government says the treatment of ethnic minorities in Somaliland is a blow to the country’s democratic asperations and sovereignty.

Minister of Finance of Somaliland Dr. Saad Ali Shire who spoke at the opening ceremony of a registration center for violence against women acknowledged the issue.

Minister Saad, following the speech by Ahmed Iman Warsame, the King of the Gaboye Clan, told the country about the issue.

“I agree with the King’s request and grievances, The way we treat these (discriminated) communities is a dark spot in our nation and our culture.” Minster Saad said.

Minister Saad also said “They alone cannot erase the wound. It is a matter for society, whether it is government or civilian.”

While the Minister of Finance Development of the Republic of Somaliland did not present any funding for programs that would deal with the issue, he seems to have started a much needed conversation about the problem.
