Somaliland: Supreme Court Chairman Meets with House Judiciary Committee

Hargeisa (SD) – The Chairman of the Supreme Court of Somaliland, Adam Haji Ali Ahmed received in his office the Judiciary, Justice, Law and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland, led by its Chairman, Yahye Abdullahi Amin, accompanied by Deputy Chairman Fuad. Ahmed Diriye, MP Barkhad Jama Batun, MP Khadar Ali Hakim and committee secretary Abdirahman Jama Nur.

The meeting between the chairman and the committee, the first of its kind, focused on strengthening and accelerating cooperation between the Judiciary and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland, and the in-depth analysis of the positive aspects of the Judiciary and its role in serving the community.


The came days after the Somaliland House of Representatives forwarding the Law on the Opening of Political Parties in Somaliland to the House of Representatives’ legal counsel.

The 2nd Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives of Somaliland Mr. Ali Hamud Jibril, said that the Law on the Opening of Political Associations No. 14 returned by the President will be referred back to the House once vetted.

Law No.14 was approved by the former House of Representatives and the House of Elders then submitted to the President of Somaliland to sign it to law in late April this year, only to returned it to the new House of Representatives.

As per Somaliland’s constitution, the president must sign the law or returned it to Parliament within 21 days of submitting it to both houses of otherwise the law will be in effect. President Bihi is said to have returned beyond the allocated time period, causing controversy.
