Somaliland: Supreme Court removes election obstacle

Hargeisa (SD) – The President of the Republic of Somaliland, HE Muse Bihi Abdi has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court dated 12/08/2020 under the symbol JSL / XM / MS / 100-545 / 08/2020, the purpose of which was a constitutional lawsuit against Article 12, Clause 1 of the House of Representatives Election Law No. 20-2 / 05 which was previously submitted by the President to the Supreme Court.

The Country’s Constitutional Court has issued a final ruling on the President’s request, in particular the Article that restricts the conduct of the House of Representatives elections this time around.

The Electoral Act, passed in 2005, stipulates that the electoral law can only be used that one time.

Somaliland’s Supreme Court has ruled that the next Somaliland House of Representatives and local elections should be held in the same way as in 2005.

An election without an amendment to the House of Representative’s regional proportion is opposed by some in the Awdal region community.
