Somaliland’s conflicting stats on HIV/AIDS levels

HARGEISA (SD) -Hargeisa Group Hospital has announced the number of HIV/AIDS cases detected over the past 20 years. The hospital’s HIV/AIDS Treatment, Care, and Monitoring Department, which was established in 2004, has been operating for 20 years.

Since 2004, the center has identified 3,206 cases of HIV/AIDS, with 2,481 patients starting treatment. However, 725 patients did not begin treatment due to personal reasons.

Currently, 1,329 individuals are receiving treatment, with 802 of them being women and 527 being men.

In 2024, as the year drew to a close, a total of 714 people were tested for HIV/AIDS, of whom 103 were found to be HIV positive. Among them, 64 were women and 39 were men.

Somaliland’s health ministry disputes the figures and released higher figures. experts believe the ministry’s stats are exaggerated, the announcements come on World Aids Day.
