Supreme Court council rejected by Puntland Parliament

GAROOWE (SD) – Puntland parliamentarians have today rejected the new Puntland Supreme Court Council, recently appointed by President Said Deni.

The session was attended by 43 members of the Puntland Supreme Court, 23 of whom rejected the council, 11 voted in favor and 9 abstained.

The Speaker of the Puntland House of Representatives, who chaired the meeting, said lawmakers rejected the vote of confidence in the Supreme Court, and called on President Deni to appoint a new Supreme Court council.

President Deni’s nominee for chief justice, Ahmed Taran, had previously refused to appear before the Puntland House of Representatives, believing it would not give him a vote of confidence.

In a recent decree issued by the office of the President of Puntland State of Somalia, Said Abdullahi Deni reappointed the rejected Puntland Supreme Court Council.

The re-appointment of the Puntland Supreme Court Council indicates that the President is not satisfied with the decision of the Puntland parliamentarians.
