The National Consultative Council green lights one-person-one vote

MOGADISHU (SD)-The National Consultative Council meeting, chaired by the President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, took place in Mogadishu from October 2 to 30, 2024. The meeting was attended by leaders of the country’s federal member states, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the Governor of Banadir region, and concluded with a communiqué.

The communiqué, consisting of five points, emphasized the importance of conducting free and fair elections in which the citizens can choose their leaders.

The meeting also decided on the timing of these one-person-one-vote elections. The local government elections are scheduled to take place in June 2025, while the parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in September 2025.

The administrations of Puntland and Jubaland did not participate in the agreement resulting from the National Consultative Council meeting, which will be presented to the federal parliament of Somalia.

In a joint press release, former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame strongly condemned and opposed the decision of the National Consultative Council to extend the term for federal member states.

The press release stated that it is illegal to extend the term for federal member states.
