The second phase of operations against Al-Shabaab starts in Hiran region

Beledweyne April 07, 2023 (SD) – Today, the second phase of the military operation against the Al-Shabaab officially began, as they were expelled from towns in the southern part of Beledweyne city in the Hiiraan region, located on the banks of the Shabelle River.

The military operation in southern Beledweyne, especially in the towns along the Shabelle River, is being carried out by government forces and local militias known as Ma’awiisleeyda, under the leadership of Hiiraan governor Ali Jeyte Cismaan.

It is reported that the military operation targeted 10 bases that the Al-Shabaab group was using to launch attacks on government forces and civilians in the eastern part of the Hiiraan region, which were previously under the control of the group.

In addition, the forces successfully secured several towns, including Beerxaano, Tarashante, Ceelahele, and other areas that were previously under the control of Al-Shabaab.

There were no reports of casualties among the government forces or the local militias during the operation, but two soldiers were reportedly injured when a roadside bomb exploded on the outskirts of the city.

Governor Jeyte stated that once the operation is completed in the southern part of Beledweyne, the forces will continue their mission to liberate towns in the western part of the Hiiraan region, which are also under the control of the Al-Shabaab group.
