WASHINGTON (SD) -The United States government has expressed unusual and strong concern about President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s leadership, accusing him of prioritizing domestic political maneuvers over efforts to combat terrorist groups, particularly Al-Shabaab.
“We are concerned that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is focusing on internal political issues instead of intensifying the fight against Al-Shabaab, at a time when the threat is growing,” said a senior U.S. official speaking to The Washington Post. These remarks, which were not previously heard during the Trump administration, come amid rising political tensions in Mogadishu, where the Federal Government is facing criticism over its handling of security, elections, and cooperation with institutions.
However, the U.S. State Department has stated that the American government remains committed to working with Somali forces and African Union troops stationed in the country.
“We will continue our close collaboration with Somali forces and the African Union troops,” read a statement from the State Department. So far, the Somali Presidency has not responded to these comments from the White House and U.S. officials.
