The UN Human Rights Committee calls for an investigation into the killings in the town of Lasanod

NY February 08, 2023 (SD) – The UN Human Rights Committee has urged the Somali government to investigate the killings in Laascaanood carried out by the security forces of Somaliland and the opposing SSC local community.

Volker Türk, the chairman of the committee, has called on the Somali government to carry out an impartial and credible investigation into the deaths of those involved in the killings.

“At least 20 people have died and it is estimated that 119 others, including children, have been injured in the conflict between security forces and local community members in Laascaanood,” said Turk.

Turk said that at least 20,000 people have been displaced by the conflict in Laascaanood, which he said is exacerbating an already difficult humanitarian situation.

“I urge the authorities to conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into the clashes so that those responsible can be held accountable in a fair trial,” he said. This news comes as the third day of fighting continues in Laascaanood in the Sool region.
