The UN to help Somali police with Election security

Mogadishu (SD) – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) has announced that it will assist Somalia in areas such as security co-operation, in particular the Security Plan for the upcoming elections.

UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia James Swan, who met with Somali Police Force Commander General Abdi Hassan Mohamed Hijar, pledged today in a meeting that his office would assist Somalia in securing the elections.

The United Nations Mission in Somalia ‘s Twitter account posted a statement regarding the meeting, detailing the issues raised.

“The UN envoy met today with the police chief. Gen. Abdi Hassan Mohamed, to discuss topics such as co-operation with Somali security agencies, stakeholder co-operation and security planning for the forthcoming elections, ”the statement said.

The Somali Police Force, for its part, said the meeting was important and that arrangements were being made to secure the venues for the next elections.

The United Nations is supporting Somalia in a number of areas, including security as well as humanitarian assistance.
