ANKARA (SD) – The Turkish government has sent a congratulatory message to the newly elected President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, expressing hopes for the resumption of talks between Somaliland and Somalia.
A statement from the Turkish Embassy in Somalia first congratulated the elections held in Somaliland, noting that they demonstrate the commitment of the Somali people to implementing democracy.
“We warmly congratulate Mr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro on his election victory in Somaliland. The peaceful manner in which the election was conducted shows the Somali people’s commitment to implementing democratic principles,” the statement said.
Turkey expressed hope that the new president would revive the dialogue and work towards unity. “We hope that under his leadership, the dialogue, unity, and overall prosperity of the region will be enhanced.”
The long-standing talks between Somaliland and Somalia stalled earlier this year after the outgoing administration of President Bihi signed a maritime agreement with Ethiopia.
The two sides have since drifted further apart, with Somalia describing the agreement as an infringement on its sovereignty. Somaliland, on the other hand, claimed that the talks had yielded little benefit and continuing them would be a waste of time.
