ANKARA (SD) -The third round of talks in Ankara between Somalia and Ethiopia, initially scheduled for September 17, has been postponed for undisclosed reasons.
This postponement comes amidst heightened tensions between the two countries, with both exchanging strong statements that could impact the continuation of the Ankara dialogue.
In the previous rounds of talks, both countries failed to reach an agreement, although Turkey had indicated that there were signs of rapprochement. However, Somalia has firmly stated that it will not compromise on Ethiopia retracting its agreement with the Somaliland administration regarding maritime boundaries.
Recently, Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi declared that Somalia would collaborate with Ethiopian separatist movements if Ethiopia does not back down from the controversial maritime agreement with Somaliland adminstration.
Ethiopia, on the other hand, has expressed significant concern over Egypt’s influence on Somalia and accused Somali leaders of forming a defense alliance with Ethiopia’s adversary. Ethiopia remains steadfast in defending its agreement with Somaliland.
There are fears that the Turkish-mediated talks might collapse, exacerbating tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. The Somali government has previously threatened substantial actions if Ethiopia continues to infringe on its sovereignty.
