U.N. Security Council authorizes new AU mission in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – The Federal Government of Somalia welcomes Security Council Resolution 2628 approving new ATMIS mission in Somalia replacing AMISOM.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Somalia is committed to the transition of ATMIS, which transfers security responsibility to the armed forces.

The new ATMIS operation will create a mobile force that will respond to Al Shabab security threats and assist the country’s armed forces in counter-terrorism operations.

“The Federal Government of Somalia commends the Security Council for its support during the technical committee discussions on how to make the ATMIS operation more efficient and move around the Transition Plan for Somalia.” said The Somali Federal Government.

The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has been in place since 2007, ends today on March 31, 2022 and is being taken over by the new African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which will remain operational until 2024.
