U.S Congress rejects Somalia troops withdrawal

Washington April 28, 2023 (SD) – The US Congress has today rejected a resolution calling for the withdrawal of US troops from Somalia by the end of the current year.

321 members of Congress voted against the resolution supporting the withdrawal of US troops from Somalia, while 101 members voted for it. The resolution which aimed the withdrawal of up to 900 American soldiers from Somalia was introduced by Republican lawmaker Matt Gaetz, of Florida.

However, those who opposed the resolution argued that the move would jeopardize US security interests in the region.

President Biden has ordered the redeployment of American troops to Somalia, reversing the decision made by his predecessor, Donald Trump, to end the US military presence in the country.
