UCID chairman says Supreme Court not neutral on bill 14

HARGEISA (SD) – The chairman of the UCID party, Faisal Ali Warabe, has accused the chairman of the Somaliland Supreme Court, Adan Haji Ali, accused him of not being neutral in the case of the opening of political associations.

“The chairman of the Supreme Court, Adan Haji Ali, only accepted the case because of ulterior motives, not a legal one.” Said chairman Faisal.

Somaliland’s opposition parties, UCID and Waddani, have strongly opposed a move by 46 lawmakers asked the Supreme Court to give a legal interpretation of controversial provisions on the opening of political parties.

Opposition groups say the high court has no jurisdiction to rule on the dispute, and that it is up to the Somaliland House of Representatives to decide.

The law on opening political associations states that registration will be opened by the end of this year, ahead of the presidential election, but President Bihi recently announced that the opening of associations had been postponed.

The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the controversial provisions of the bill, submitted to the court by more than half of the council members on December 21, 2021.
