UK Parliament to debate Somaliland’s independence

LONDON (SD) – The UK Parliament is set to hear a brief debate on Somaliland’s independence on Tuesday according to Gavin Williamson, a South Staffordshire MP.

The UK Parliament is set to convene on January 18, 2022, to discuss the issue of Somaliland’s independence, and the agenda of the debate is proposed by MP Gavin Williamson, will be whether to Recognize Somaliland or not.

Gavin Williamson, is a former Minister of Defense of the United Kingdom, and visited Somaliland during his time as Minister.

This is of great significance to the Republic of Somaliland, as the UK Parliament is debating Somaliland’s 30 year quest for recognition.

It is not the first time the UK parliament is debating the recognition of Somaliland, which regained independence from Somalia in 1991.

In December 2019, 11 MPs, mostly from the Labor Party, filed a motion asking the UK Parliament to recognize Somaliland, a former British protectorate that united with Somalia after independence.

Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the move, saying it was following the debate on the Somaliland issue in the UK Parliament.

Cardiff, Sheffield and Birmingham city councils previously recognized Somaliland’s independence.
