WASHINGTON (SD) President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election, effectively ending his campaign for a second term.
In a post on the social media platform X, Biden stated that he will continue to serve as President and Commander-in-Chief until his term concludes in January 2025. He also mentioned that he will address the nation later this week.
Biden’s decision clears the path for his Vice President, Kamala Harris, to become the first Black woman to run for President. Biden, who is 81 years old, expressed his full support for Harris as the Democratic nominee.
It remains uncertain if other top Democrats will challenge Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination or if the party will keep the race open to all contenders.
Biden’s decision comes after both public and private pressures from lawmakers and Democratic officials urging him to step aside following a poor performance in a debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
