We urge Israel to allow humanitarian aid to reach the affected civilians, Somalia tells UNSC

NY (SD) – After officially joining the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last Thursday, Somalia participated in its first council meeting last night as one of the 15 non-permanent members.

The Federal Republic of Somalia, represented by its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abukar Osman Balle, attended the session and delivered a speech addressing various issues.

Ambassador Balle presented Somalia’s position on the Palestinian cause and the atrocities committed by Israel against civilians. He stated that Somalia is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Palestinian territories occupied by Israel.

“Mr. President, Somalia is deeply concerned about the worsening situation in Gaza and the ongoing suffering inflicted on the Palestinian people by the prolonged conflict led by Israel and its allies. We urge Israel to heed the strong calls of the international community and allow humanitarian aid to reach the affected civilians,” Ambassador Balle said.

He further emphasized, “Civilians, particularly women and children, are facing dire health issues, including severe food shortages and malnutrition. Immediate attention is needed to address this crisis.”

As a member of the UNSC, the Federal Government of Somalia is expected to focus on promoting peace in the Horn of Africa and globally during its tenure.
