Mogadishu (SD) – The Somali Federal Parliament today held a meeting in Villa Hargeisa, the capital of Mogadishu, to ratify the women’s quota law.
The meeting was chaired by National Assembly Speaker Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, and after a lengthy debate 134 lawmakers agreed that women’s seats should be reserved for them, while 7 MPs were rejected the motion.
Parliament Speaker Mohamed Mursal announced the results of the vote on the provision of the quota of women of the House of the People by the Transitional Federal Parliament committee in preparation for the final election law.
The bill passed today by the House of Representatives stipulates that seats in both Houses that women currently hold can only be run for by women.
